Why hashes matter in evidence workflows

A hash is a fingerprint of bytes. If one byte changes, the fingerprint changes.

In practice, SHA-256 helps you:

  • Reference a file unambiguously in reports and systems
  • Detect silent changes between copies
  • Bind a signed certificate to an exact artefact

CanonProof includes SHA-256 in every certificate so a third party can verify you’re referencing the same artefact.
